Thanksgiving at Home

December 2nd, 2008 · 70 Comments

My family knows how to pull together a great Thanksgiving. Sure, the dog may have helped herself to mashed potatoes and my Dad called the security company to keep the firefighters away in case of an alarm (how many years in a row have I set it off?), but everything came together for a beautiful 1:00 meal.

Thanksgiving 2008

Some highlights:
I mixed and matched a few Gourmet recipes for the centerpiece of this meal. This turkey is super easy, and this is the second year I’ve made it. And, with the help of this simple stock, this was the best stuffing and gravy I’ve ever made. (I 3/4th-ed the recipe and added less liquid than it calls for, so the gravy was nice and thick.)

My sister Kelsey raided Bon Appétit for her recipes this year, settling on cheesy scalloped potatoes, and tangy buttermilk biscuits. And her crowning achievement was a perfectly baked Pumpkin Cheesecake with Marshmallow Sour Cream Topping. I was stuffed after dinner, but I still managed to eat a sliver of cheesecake for dessert.

Kyla, the middle sister, always makes mashed potatoes and deviled eggs, but only she knows those recipes. She swirls ingredients around in bowls and asks us to taste until they are just right.

And we were lucky to have guests who brought wonderful additions, our Mom to pick out the turkey and set a beautiful table and, of course, a dog to lick the plates clean.
